The purpose of the outdoor classroom is to connect class work with the outdoor setting as a way to engage students in furthering their understanding through a hands-on adventure and discovery-based approach. Davidson River High School teachers in various departments (e.g., language, science, art, etc.) will collaborate with Oxbow River Snorkeling to create a climate of learning that will enable students to further understand materials outlined in their coursework.
The outdoor classroom is a conduit for students to develop an interest for the natural world. Humans are born with an innate curiosity about the natural world and are genetically wired to need nature (Louv, 2005). The outdoor environment allows the educator to better understand the interests of individuals and build coursework around these interests.
