The gilt darter (Percina evides) is one of the many animal species you may encounter while snorkeling our local streams and rivers.
This species of fish is one of the most common darters in the upper French Broad River basin. Their diet consists primarily of aquatic insect larvae including mayflies, caddisflies, black flies, and midges. Male coloration is the most variable of all darters in this region and becomes more vibrant during spawning season. Spawning occurs from mid-April through May. |
